Kens Lui has been the First Kapellmeister at Theater Chemnitz since the 2025/26 season. In the 2026/27 season, he will conduct a new production of Il trovatore there, as well as revivals of La traviata, Hänsel und Gretel, The Nutcracker, and Romeo and Juliet. He previously served as First Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater Meiningen, where he conducted a broad repertoire ranging from Mozart to Wagner, including Tristan und Isolde, Tannhäuser, Don Carlos, La bohème, Madama Butterfly, Le nozze di Figaro, and Don Giovanni.

His opera career began in 2022 at the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg, where he initially worked as a répétiteur before being promoted to Second Kapellmeister the very next season. In the summer of 2025, he returned to the Heidelberg Castle Festival for performances of Carmen.

From 2022 to 2024, Lui was a scholarship recipient of the Forum Dirigieren of the German Music Council. He assisted Marie Jacquot with the WDR Symphony Orchestra and the hr-Sinfonieorchester, and working with Elias Grandy as well as the National Youth Orchestra of Germany (Bundesjugendorchester). Under Grandy's mentorship, he was also invited to the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Conductor.

He gained international experience as a Conducting Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, where he worked with Robert Spano, Alan Gilbert, and Mark Stringer. His strong affinity for contemporary music also led him to the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music under Cristian Măcelaru, as well as to projects with the Peter Eötvös Foundation, working with the Ars Nova Ensemble and the UMZE Ensemble.

Born in Hong Kong, he completed his Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, where he studied with Christian Ehwald, Hans-Dieter Baum, and Alexander Vitlin. During his studies, he conducted renowned orchestras including the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the MDR Symphony Orchestra, the Symphoniker Hamburg, and the Kammerakademie Potsdam.
